Methods of Learning Vocabulary

Methods of Learning Vocabulary
As every student has to pass the rite of exams with various acronyms, the SAT is one of the earliest ones he or she may come across. Most people know it is one of the main exams that high school students undertake and it is based on the American Curriculum. Perhaps the most obvious quality of American exams are that they will be:
·         Multiple Choice Questions (MCQs)
·         Strongly vocabulary driven
This might be an advantage or disadvantage to an average student depending on where his or her skills and affinities lie. Perhaps the saving grace of MCQs lies in the fact that there is no need to show any sort of working and steps (as is the case with the British Curriculum) but only to mark the correct answer.
The bane of the test taker would probably be the onus of having to learn extensive amounts of vocabulary. This in itself is akin to climbing a mountain and is just as challenging. Learning new words is often not a big deal, but English makes it a touch more challenging because it has heavy influences from other tongues. Words commonly spoken today have roots in the Latin, some of the Romance languages (French, Spanish, Italian), Greek and others.
So what is the Best Way to Learn new vocabulary?
Besides the old school methods of picking up a dictionary and learning the words listed in it, the modern student has an array of methods that can be utilized.
1)      Read more. It seems to be one of the most obvious and oldest of ways, but it definitely has great benefits to bestow on the one willing to undergo the process. At present, individuals have the great benefit of the internet: besides turning to paper based physical books, there are e-books, online magazines, and other electronic devices that can aid the reader to find materials of his or her choice. There are fiction stories, non-fiction reads, trade magazines, topic based websites for readers who love reading about science, fashion, religion, politics, health and personal care, nature, technology, the news etc. What to read is now limited only by the preferences of the reader.

2)      Watch shows and movies that interest you. With the advent of Netflix, online streaming, podcasts, and entertainment networks such as OSN on TV- there is a cornucopia of choice and access. Based on the watchers’selections, they are exposed to a variety of vernaculars, specialist vocabulary and the layers of meanings a simple word may have. That in itself is a lesson on how words can be utilized to convey shades of meanings, their usage, and what part of speech they are.

3)      Listening to lectures, podcasts, music and news can also help students learn new words.

4)      Using various educational apps on phones, iPads, tablets, laptops are another means to make the process of learning simpler and less taxing on the tired student. Certain apps create an interface that is easy to use, fun and not repetitive in asking students to spell out the words they wish to learn. They utilize methods like matching, filling in the blanks, choosing the correct definition for the term or vice versa along with repetition to attain the goals of learning. They further review the old words in the following sessions to ensure that the new words have been properly cemented into the minds of the users.

5)      Knowledge of prefixes, suffixes and roots is also a great key to help unlock unfamiliar big words. Upon encountering new enormous words, having the ability to dissect them at the joints of prefixes, roots and suffixes can greatly aid the student in comprehending the meaning of this unfamiliar word.

Youngistaan (2014) Hindi New Movie

Youngistaan is a love story set in the backdrop of Indian politics. It is the story of Abhimanyu Kaul & the love of his life, Anwita Chauhan. Abhimanyu Kaul, a young boy living an ordinary life in Japan, finds himself in the political spotlight due to the sudden death of his father, the Prime Minister of India. Travel with Abhimanyu, as he struggles to balance his complicated personal relationships with the political resistance against him from within his own party. Being a public figure, by reluctantly accepting to represent the governing party, much against his own wishes and at the cost of his private life, is a double-edged sword that Abhimanyu must walk on.
Thought of as an amateur and incapable of handling the issues at large by one and all, (except the ever faithful Akbar Patel, Secretary to the P.M.), the film closes as a victorious Abhimanyu changes the course of events and turns the tide his way, through his hard work, honestly, and above all, a political legacy – a sharp, leading mind that not everyone inherits.

What are Salt Lamps?

I have several Himalayan Salt Lamps at my house and I've talked before about how I use them to help purify indoor air and for their soothing red glow.

We use these lamps so often that I figured they deserved their own post.

What are Salt Lamps?

Salt lamps are simply large pieces of pure Himalayan Salt with a small bulb inside. They can be solid pieces of salt (like this one) or decorative baskets filled with large crystals of salt (like these).

It is important to make sure that the lamp is from a pure Himalayan Crystal source and not a cheap imitation made from rock salt.

Himalayan salt lamps are made from pure, food grade, himalayan salt crystals and can even be powdered to use as salt in recipes if needed.

The importance of negative ions…

Salt lamps are natural negative ion generators. At any given time, there are both positive and negative ions in the air. As a flashback to freshman science:

“An ion is an atom or molecule in which the total number of electrons is not equal to the total number of protons, giving the atom a net positive or negative electrical charge.”

Negative ions occur more often in nature and they are often created by things like lightening storms, sunlight, waterfalls, and ocean waves. This is one of the reasons people often report feeling renewed or refreshed after a storm or at the beach.

Positive ions are often created by electronic devices like computers, TVs, microwaves, and even vacuum cleaners and can often exacerbate problems like allergies, stress and sleep trouble. Negative ions can neutralize positive ions (they bond together) and help cleanse the air.

The unique combination of salt and a light source in salt lamps are what cause the negative ions. Salt is hygroscopic, meaning that it attracts water to its surface and this water evaporates quickly due to the small amount of heat from the light source (this is also why salt lamps tend to sweat and appear wet in humid climates). The negative ions are generated during the evaporation process.

Since things like airborne mold, bacteria, and allergens often carry a positive charge, they can be neutralized by negative ions.

WebMD explains some of the benefits of negative ions in the air:

Generally speaking, negative ions increase the flow of oxygen to the brain; resulting in higher alertness, decreased drowsiness, and more mental energy,” says Pierce J. Howard, PhD, author of The Owners Manual for the Brain: Everyday Applications from Mind Brain Research and director of research at the Center for Applied Cognitive Sciences in Charlotte, N.C.

“They also may protect against germs in the air, resulting in decreased irritation due to inhaling various particles that make you sneeze, cough, or have a throat irritation.”

And for a whopping one in three of us who are sensitive to their effects, negative ions can make us feel like we are walking on air. You are one of them if you feel instantly refreshed the moment you open a window and breathe in fresh, humid air.

Places like waterfalls and beaches where negative ions are naturally produced can have a negative ion concentration of up to 10,000 negative ions per cubic centimeter whereas busy cities can have negative ion levels as low as 100 ions per cubic centimeter.

What we use…

It is possible to buy machines that create negative ions, but I’ve found that salt lamps are a less expensive and very effective alternative.

I use salt lamps often in our home, and especially in winter months when it isn’t possible to have the windows open or to spend as much time outside. We now have a solid salt lamp or a basket lamp in each room of our home and I love them for their ambient glow and their negative ions.
